July Highlights

National Ice Cream Day

In 2019, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 21—but some people celebrate National Ice Cream MONTH! You can celebrate ice cream any time with Lee Wardlaw‘s poem “I Scream!” and then write your own poem about ice cream—after you’ve had a scoop, of course!

In The Poetry Friday Anthology for Celebrations, Holly Thompson, a poet who has lived in Japan for two decades, writes about the Japanese holiday called Obon. You can look here for an Obon festival near you (in mid-to-late July) or learn more about this Japanese holiday by watching this video!

Picture Book Pairing: Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Changed Music by Margarita Engle

National Moon Walk Day

Celebrate space travel twice this month: on National Moon Walk Day (July 21) and again on the Birthday of NASA (July 29)! Poet Susan Blackaby asked to write about Moon Walk Day and the Birthday of NASA because her father worked on the team that designed Neil Armstrong’s backpack. How NEAT is that?!

Picture Book Pairing: Moonshot by Brian Floca (and if you haven’t celebrated National Ice Cream Day/Month yet, share some freeze-dried astronaut ice cream treats!)
